History
It was during the summer of 1945 that a group of dedicated Shriner horsemen started to meet and practice for parading and participating in planned parades.
Soon they were invited to ride on their first ride for the Los Angles County Sheriff’s Posse. Gene Biscailuz was Sheriff and a Shriner of long standing.
Upon the success of these Sheriff’s parades, we promptly petitioned the Al Malaikah Temple to recognize a mounted unit. We were observed by the Nobility the balance of 1945 and 1946, but still no recognition.
It was on April 18, 1947 that Al Malaikah’s Potentate, with encouragement from the Divan, gave recognition and we were on our way. The ” DADDY” of the Al Malaikah Silver Mounted Patrol was Potentate Elmer P. Bromley.
Each member of Al Malaikah Silver Mounted Patrol owns his Palomino horse, silver saddle, equipment and trailer and maintains his horse’s wellbeing. Until recently, we purchased our own uniforms. The uniforms were professionally designed and manufactured by the renowned entertainment industry designer, Nudie of North Hollywood, who had designed costumes for Roy Rogers, Elvis Presley and John Wayne to mention a few and our unit, the for best effects with hi-def television—a true picture of pageantry.
Our parades have taken us up and down Southern California, while participating with Al Malaikah Temple. The last Shrine Convention Parade we participated in was the 2007 Imperial Session in Anaheim California.
Our membership is currently stands at 10. We are looking to expand our membership base with the infusion of dedicated Shriners through the comradery of horsemanship, all the while having fun and helping kids! The organization is structured with a President, Captain, Secretary, Treasurer and Chaplain. Our meeting are held every-other month at one of the members’ homes.
One of our most famous parades is the “Tournament of Roses Parade” held in Pasadena, California on New Year’s Day. Many of our members have ridden in the parade with enthusiasm as a means of constantly identifying the Shrine, through our global outreach via television and other electronic medias with mercy work in aiding children with spinal and other orthopedic disorders, cleft palate and those children who have suffered severe burns, all, regardless of their ability to pay.
